"Without dedication of hard working, no matter how “smart” you are, there’s no way that you can pass the CFA exams"
- Tell us about yourself. What is your previous experience? How did you decide to enroll in the "Financial Analyst" program?
My name is Liu Yuan, from China. I have a bachelor diploma in the major of “Storage and Transportation of Oil and Gas Engineering”. And right after my graduation, I spent a year in “Moscow State Institute of International Relations”(MGIMO) studying Russian language. Not long after I finished my language course in MGIMO, I had to go back to China for irresistible reasons. During the 3 years of Covid-19, seeing how the pandemic severely impacted the global economy and financial system, I found myself fascinated by how the dynamic changes in our financial system impacted our economy and society, and developed a strong interest in the knowledge of finance. After some research I’ve come to realize that the CFA program would be the best suit for me, because of its excellent construction of knowledge and high standard of ethics, hence I’ve decided to participate in the program. But to have a successful career in finance industry I believe I’ll need a master degree. And I think I’ve found just the perfect master program for me – “Financial Analyst” in HSE.
- It is a common knowledge that preparing for and passing the CFA exams is quite difficult. You passed all 3 levels. What motivated you to do it? What is your secret of success?
My highest motivation for pursuing the CFA program had always been the eager of knowledge, and the CFA program has a reputation for its rigorous curriculum, which covers a broad range of topics including ethics, investment tools, asset valuation, portfolio management , and financial analysis. But of course the global recognition of the CFA program and the career advancement are also one of the major reasons that motivates me to pursue the CFA program.
As for the secret of success, I would say yes there are certainly ways for you to study more efficiently. But without dedication of hard working, no matter how “smart” you are trying to be while studying, there’s no way that you can pass the CFA exams. Simply because the not only the volume of the knowledge that a candidate needs to possess to pass each level of the CFA exams is too large but also it requires a candidate to have a deep understanding of that knowledge.
- In which country did you take the exams?
I took all of the CFA exams in China.
- Did the Master's program you are studying help you in your preparation and passing? If yes, to what extent?
Certainly, the Financial Analyst program helped me a lot in studying for the CFA program. I’ve found many concepts and knowledge already known to me while studying for the CFA exams thanks to the classes I took from my master degree course. But I would say the most valuable things I’ve got from the Financial Analyst program are the knowledges that the CFA program doesn’t go too deep, and also the practical skills of using theoretical knowledge in practice.
- What advice do you have for those who want to follow your path?
For those who wish to pursue the CFA program:
1. Before making the decision, make sure you understand the sacrifice you’ll have to make, it’s a journey that will take years, and to succeed it, you’ll have to let go of a lot of your free time.
2. After making the decision, don’t give up. There will be moments of frustration, and there will be moments when you’ll feel like giving up. But eventually when your dedication and hard work pay off, trust me, you’ll find it worth it.
